RYA Marine Radio Short Range VHF & GMDSS - Shore Based Course - 1 Day (2 Oct 2010)

The course provides instruction in the use of marine radios including GMDSS. Routine, distress, urgency and safety procedures. It is conducted using both DSC Radios and simulators.

There are no prerequisite, however you will benefit by knowing the phonetic alphabet prior to attending, which we will supply.

The tuition cost is £55, plus you will also need to bring £30 payable to the RYA for the issue for your license and a passport size photograph. The venue, The Howard Palmer Room at St Sebastian's Hall, Nine Mile Ride, Crowthorne, Berkshire. RG40 3BA. The hall is on the corner of Nine Mile Ride and Honey Hill.

This radio operator qualification authorises the holder to legally operate a VHF radio both with and without Digital Selective Calling (DSC).

Syllabus :

Background information on the GMDSS system and its equipment and licensing requirements
Radio rules and regulations
Operation of marine VHF equipment including DSC functions
The phonetic alphabet
Basic radio language and protocols.
Correct use of the various channels.
How to make calls to other stations
How to send a MAYDAY (Distress Alert).
How to send an urgency alert and a safety call

A short written exam takes place towards the end of the day, the certificate is issued on successfully passing the exam.

Duration: 1 Day.

You will need to bring; two passport sized pictures of yourself and your lunch.

The John Mountain Challenge Cup - Balance Payment (15 Oct 2010)

Each year the RBYC holds its flag ship event - " The John Mountain Challenge Cup". It was established to test core seamanship skills for skippers, mates and their crews. It's competitive, fun, exhausting usually wet, frustrating, argumentative, and probably the best event of the year!

And yes there are two cups to be won - Best Boat & Best Skipper.

Are you up for the challenge?

The cost of the full trip will be £200 which includes a T Shirt will be provided to mark the event. The boats will be chartered from Hamble Point.

This event is only open for Full Members & it woudl be great if you could get away from the office a little earlier than the published time of 7pm for this trip although not essential.

Tall Ships Charity YACHT Regatta - Deposit (5 Nov 2010)

Charity Regatta sponsored by Tall Ships Youth Trust

This weekend is run by the Tall Ships Youth trust & is a charity event to raise money. It is run by Sunsail in Port Solent and would involve two yacht races on Saturday & two races on Sunday.

Hard work, cold, tiring with probably lots of shouting but great fun.

There is a charity gala dinner in Cowes on the Saturday evening.

The cost of the event is expected to be £150 plus £30 for the gala dinner. A deposit of £40 is required to secure your place.

Come along, join a team & fuel up on a dinner of chilli, lasagne (beef or veggie) or curry (chicken or veggie). Then let your inner skittle fiend out & go for glory over a couple of games of skittles.

RYA First Aid Course

Duration 1 Day

Instructors: Peter and Carol-Anne Pocock Starlight Coaching.

The club has used the Pocock's for a number of years and they have a very broad experience of sailing and first aid and give a really good days training. They have always been praised by attendees of previous courses as particularly knowledgeable trainers.

Cost: £65

This RYA course is designed to teach attendees all aspects of first aid on a yacht. Whilst hopefully most of us are unlikely to finish up in a liferaft at sea most of us are likely to have to administer some kind of first aid when sailing. The course is broad ranging but particularly useful in covering the life threatening events that can occur on a boat like how to deal with an unconscious casualty, heart attacks,hypothermia etc.

If you sail regularly you should have your first aid up to date. (RYA First Aid only lasts 3 years)

If you are a Day skipper or Coastal skipper you must have your first aid up to date.

You will need to bring your lunch.

RYA Diesel Engine Course (15 Jan 2011)

Detailing the various systems of the engine - Air, Fuel and Cooling. Winterisation, common faults, preventative maintenance and best practice.

Tutor - Rob Hammond. Rob as well as being an active member of the club, is by profession a motor engineer, with extensive experience of diesel engines.

Price £75, which includes RYA Pack and Certificate.

How about this for planning eh?!?!?

Our annual dinner is open to all Club members - new & old, family & friends & costs ~ £40 per person (to be confirmed later in year).

Come join the fun - a fab 3 course meal, fun awards & a fandabbydosy disco to strutt your stuff to - if there's room on the dance floor with the Terry / Errey dance duo leading the way :-)

While dress code may be formalish (black tie / lounge suits - no oilies!!) the event is very informal.

Arrive 7:30 - 8:00 for a welcome drink followed by a three course dinner.

Let your dinner go down as you sit back & enjoy the annual awards as nominated by you - the serious & the embarrassing - which reflect the highlights & enduring memories of last year's sailing.

Finally a disco before turfing out time at 12:30 am.
