RYA YM Coastal/ Coastal Skipper Practical

The RYA Coastal Skipper course is suitable for the more advanced skippers who have a practical ability to RYA Day Skipper level plus a knowledge of navigation, meteorology, collision regulations, safety and passage planning up to RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster shore based standard. Unlike most other schools in the area, your mooring fees and wet weather clothing for the duration of your course are included in the price quoted along with food whilst aboard.

RYA Coastal Skipper without Exam: Duration 5 Days

This course consists of skippered passages in a variety of situations. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages and learn more about passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations. Your certificate will be endorsed as having been taken in tidal waters. By the end of the course you should be able to skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night and have the knowledge, if not the experience, to become a Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore.

Pre-course experience: 15 days, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours
    Minimum course duration: 5 days
    Minimum age: 17

RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Preparation PLUS Exam: Duration 7 Days

This preparation course is designed for those who wish to take the RYA / MCA Yachtmaster Coastal exam. The course gives potential candidates the opportunity to thoroughly revise both practical and theoretical subjects. You will spend five days onboard the yacht with one of our fully qualified professional RYA Yachtmaster instructors prior to taking the RYA / MCA Yachtmaster Coastal examination.

Sailing will be in local waters and the instructor will tailor the course to your needs but in our experience this will often include: passage planning, skippering techniques, man-overboard recovery, meteorology, close quarters boat handling and pilotage in restricted visibility.

We would recommend you arrive for the course already having a thorough knowledge of the IRPCS Collision Regulations particularly in relation to lights, shapes and signals. The successful Yachtmaster Coastal candidate is an experienced yachtsman who has a theoretical knowledge to the level of the RYA Yachtmaster shore based course and will be able to skipper a cruising yacht on passages up to 60 miles from port. The RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competency is acknowledged throughout the World as the top sailing qualification.

Candidates must also hold the Restricted (VHF only) Radio Operator's Certificate or Short Range Certificate and RYA First Aid Certificate or recognised alternatives.

Pre-course experience: 30 days, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles, 12 night hours
    Minimum course duration: 5 days

Peter is a personal friend of RBYC Member, Henri Grech and has kindly offered to talk to us about his sailing adventures.

His chosen charity; IMPACT Foundation's vision is of a world free from needless disability.  We believe that no one should become or remain needlessly disabled through disease, lack of knowledge or shortage of medical services.

The IMPACT programme, across 11 countries of Africa and Asia, prevents and treats needless disability; improves health; and as a consequence, alleviates poverty.

Born in Twickenham to Maltese parents, Peter was brought up in Malta.

Educated at St Aloysius College and the Royal University of Malta where he studied medicine.

A keen sailor, he completed a single-handed Round Britain sail in 2013, raising over £3000 for Impact.

Peter has been a volunteer surgeon with Impact since 2005 with nine trips to Bangladesh and one to Nepal.
